Cardi B is taking fans behind the doors of the WAP house. The rapper revealed the work that went into producing the video for her hit with Megan Thee Stallion during a special annotated version of the video for Vevo’s Footnotes.

“The process was really long. You know the coronavirus makes everything slower,” she said.

The star wanted to strike the tone with her wardrobe. “I wanted to show my boobs, but I wanted to make it very tasteful,” she said.

Her stylist Kolin Carter reach across continents to comply with her wishes. “Packages were coming very late especially when it comes from Europe and taking our sizes,” she said. “The fashion was just amazing.”

“I just want my fans to know that I work really hard for this. I go hard because when you have something that is not good quality, people always talk s**t about it,” she added. “I just wanted something that you guys have fun and get ratchet to in the clubs, or in your basement, because you know the clubs are closed.”

The video’s director Colin Tilley broke down the steps the production had to take to ensure a healthy environment. “We shot in the middle of quarantine, so from getting all the crew tested, following all safety precautions, this added an entirely other challenge to our set,” he said.

Tilley, who developed the visuals for Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, shared his inspiration for the whimsical theme of the video. “I’m a big Tim Burton fan, I would say I’m always inspired by childhood books, Dr. Seuss, etc,” he said. He described the different shades in the scenes as a “color wave.”

Each of the stars had strong opinions. He described the process of creating with them as “Intense, precise, and a very wild ride.”

Cardi’s favorite aspects of the scenery were the backdrops to her and Megan Thee Stallion’s solo scenes.

“I really liked my solo, I like both solos because I just really thought and I knew that it was gonna be so fire. A room completely covered with cheetah,” she said. “A room covered with like, tigers. I originally wanted Megan to have a spider on her head, I don’t know why, I just thought it was gonna be so beautiful,” she continued.

She expressed admiration for her costars including Normani, Rosalia, Mulatto, Rubi Rose, Kylie Jenner and Sukihana.

“I wanted different women from different backgrounds that do different things. I wanted female rappers, models, I wanted Spanish artists, and I was just so grateful that these girls took their time of day and did this video, and they just looked so amazing, so pretty. I think they were really happy and I love it.”
