Keke Palmer never set out to be a trailblazer but that’s exactly what she is.

The 22-year-old actress was Broadway’s first Black Cinderella and recently became the first African-American Pink Lady in a major presentation of Grease, or as Fox called it Grease: Live, which aired in late January. (In case you missed it, you can preorder a DVD copy.)

Palmer has also starred in Scream Queens, Masters of Sex and True Jackson, VP. That said, getting to play 1950s sex kitten Marty Maraschino was Palmer’s moment of Black girl magic, she says.

“I waited my entire life for a moment like that. I hate saying it was a huge deal that I was the first African-American to ever be a part of this musical,” Palmer says. “It’s great, but I also want people to feel like it’s crazy, because it shouldn’t always be this way. But I loved that my little brother and sister got to watch this show and actually see a diverse world just like the one around them.”
