Drake’s ‘Nice For What’ Video Is A Celebration Of Women—Especially Black Women

Drake’s ‘Nice For What’ Video Is A Celebration Of Women—Especially Black Women
By Paula Rogo · Updated October 24, 2020
Drake kept his promise of gifting the world new music on Friday—and he didn’t disappoint. The 6ix God released his latest single, “Nice For What” with an accompanying music video that was a salute to all the boss ladies of the world. But it was the number of black women cameos in the video that really caught our attention!
First of all, the song samples Lauryn Hill’s iconic “Ex-Factor” song from her debut Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album (Cardi B — who released her new album Friday — also sampled the same song on her debut offering). But the “Nice For What” video itself, directed by Karena Evans, also showcases a cadre of global black women currently in their prime. From ballerina Misty Copeland to the rapper Syd, each new frame of the video brought a delightful surprise of another black woman icon. The video also included Insecure creator Issa Rae, actress Rashida Jones, model Jourdan Dunn, actress Tracee Ellis Ross, comedian Tiffany Haddish, actress (and Harvard-bound) Yara Shahidi, actress Zoe Saldana, model-twins Elizabeth and Victoria Lejonhjärta, and Black Panther actress Letitia Wright among others. Not only were the black women featured from allover the world, but they also proudly represented different complexions and ages. The lyrics of the song itself were written to empower boss women who handle their business everyday. With lines like, “You really pipin’ up on these n****s / You gotta be nice for what to these n***s?”, many were here for all that Drake was offering:

This is a video where Black women of different complexions are actually well represented. If this comment is literally about being American born, wait until I tell you where Drake is from... https://t.co/shyM0FfsRg

Black. Women. Are. The. Game. Changing. Market.

Drake understands. Case closed.
