Black Panther is continuing to make history as the year comes to a close. Following a 2018 that has seen the blockbuster film become the third highest-grossing movie of all time with an earning of over $1.3 billion globally at the box office, the worldwide fan-favorite has now become the first Marvel movie to receive a Golden Globe nomination in the category of Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Fandango Managing Editor, Erik Davis, first shared the news via his Twitter account shortly after the Golden Globe nominations were announced on Thursday morning.

Congrats to @MarvelStudios for landing their first ever Best Picture nod at the #GoldenGlobes today with #BlackPanther. No superhero film in the history of the awards show has ever been nominated for Best Picture (Drama). This is the first. pic.twitter.com/MxGHrXlbCy

Outside of Hollywood, the storyline, representation, and over all tone present in Black Panther resonated deeply within Black communities across the globe, creating a cultural phenomenon unlike any other. With a predominantly Black cast, amazing performances throughout and a Black director at the helm, the nomination only adds to the endless list of reasons why Oscar buzz continues to build around arguably the best film of the year. Although Marvel has yet to comment on this specific accolade, the Marvel Entertainment Twitter account did send out a tweet celebrating Black Panther‘s three Golden Globe nominations.
