ESSENCE.com’s “New and Next” column spotlights the brightest new talents we think you should know. This week we meet songwriter turned singer, Sye Elaine Spence.
Sye Elaine Spence, a singer and songwriter hailing from New York City, has been musically inclined since the age of eight when her mother bought her a piano. The young musician meshed her love for poetry with her love for music and studied the voices of greats like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson. Fast forward to 2008 and Spence was on her way to fulfilling her dream of becoming a songwriter while discovering that she might be interested in being an artist as well. Insert her current four-track EP, Bloom, and we have the beginning to the star’s musical journey.
Check out Sye Elaine Spence as she sings the title song to her EP Bloom and let us know what you think.
