There are few artists bold enough to go where Brooklyn by way of Memphis singer Valerie June is going. Blending Appalachian folk music, blues, country and gospel, June is charting new territory with a sound she calls “organic moonshine roots music.” She spoke with ESSENCE.com about her new album Pushin’ Against a Stone and being a Black woman with a banjo making bluegrass music.
