The rapper, a self-proclaimed cultural anthropologist, said that he snuck into a Texas convention center to volunteer post-Katrina.
Lecrae will do anything to lend a helping hand.
The rapper and first-time ESSENCE Fest performer admitted that after Hurricane Katrina hit, he was determined to help in any way that he could—even if that meant sneaking in to volunteer.
“I was on my way to New Orleans [when Katrina hit] and had to turn around to Texas,” he told ESSENCE. “I remember just feeling really connected because of everything that happened and went to volunteer in Dallas just to serve. They said they were full of volunteers, and I actually snuck into the convention center to be a volunteer and help out with Katrina.”
Lecrae, calling himself a cultural anthropologist, admitted that he has a deep connection to the city, recalling his days visiting family in the Big Easy.
“There’s just so much culture here, so much richness: their own food, their own language,” he said. “It’s just a beautiful place, and I love to be here any time I get a chance to.”
