Independence Day fans will be sad to learn Will Smith will not be part of the sequel. According to the film’s director, Roland Emmerich, Smith costs too much to recruit. “He’s too expensive,” said Emmerich to the New York Daily News. “Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name.” There’s no indication who will take the lead role. Although Emmerich wouldn’t say who from the original film would be returning, he did give one small clue: “We have like maybe half of the people that you know from the first film and the other half [of the] people are new.” [NY Daily News]
