Through a crowd of eccentric festival regalia, from see-thru outfits to ensembles with rhythmic fringe that swayed melodically to the sounds of Jill Scott, Tierra Whack, and FKA twigs, you could make out glitter rimmed eyelids, heavenly hair halos, and the beautiful melanin underneath it all at this year’s Afropunk Festival.
Commodore Barry Parkway wasn’t just a hotspot for music lovers this past weekend; It was a wellspring of boundless black beauty.

Attendees adorned their faces with tribal paints and jewels and abandoned traditional festival flower headdresses for braided crowns instead.
