If you try to put Laci Jordan in a box, you’ll have an incredibly difficult time.
At best, you can call her an artist. From designing woke merch (her don’t touch my hair pins are everything!), to photography and even hosting her own podcast, Laci has her hands in a lot of different pots.
In addition to being known for her creative hustle, Laci’s also become known for her signature ‘do — a short jet black pixie cut that gives the ultimate ’90s Nia Long vibes. Keeping reading for her tips on how she maintains her tresses and the sage beauty advice she lives by.
We absoluelty love your pixie cut, and the fact that you’re bringing fingerwaves back. When it comes to hair, what are your must-have products?
“I consider myself president of the pixie club and I also have a relaxer so I take extra measures to keep my hair healthy – this includes taking Biotin, consistent deep conditioners/steam treatments, drinking lots of water, sleeping in a satin wrap, and I’m very loyal to my hair stylist (at least every 3 weeks) Melanie Charlton.
Currently my go-to’s are KeraCare Moisturizing Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave-In Conditioner, KeraCare Edge Tamer (ladies, it’s one of the best in the business), Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine, Coconut Oil, Nairobi Wrap-It Shine Foaming Lotion, black strip wraps (for molding my hair), and my handy dandy BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Mini flatiron.”
Let’s talk makeup! Do you like to experiment with your look or are you more of a mascara only kind of gal?
“Right now, I’m all about change and I’ve been trying out new products, colors, and applications. My go-to foundation is MAC’s Studio Fix Liquid Foundation (I live by this), and their Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation.
I’m a HUGE fan of Fenty Beauty and I’ve recently incorporated a few of those products into my regiment. After applying foundation, I follow up with the Fenty Beauty’s Match Stix (my combo is suede, espresso, and sinamon).
Along with the Match Stix I’m really into the Trophy Wife highlighter and the Stunna Paint in Uncensored. My eyebrows are a little thin so I live by the MAC’s eyebrow pencil. If you have struggle brows like me I recommend applying castor oil to them every night, its helped me out so much.
Another recent purchase is Two Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara – as of now it’s a winner in my book.”
Use three words to describe your beauty mantra.
“Comfort is key. Glow on, honey.”
What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever been given?
“Love your own skin, no matter what! Its cliché but with social media and the idea that you need to be flawless it’s advice that needs to be told.
It’s also a huge lesson I’ve learned this year in regards of self-acceptance. Another one is don’t be afraid to experiment and figure out what works for you, it may take time but it will happen.”
If you could give your 15 year-old self some beauty advice, what would you say?
“You the bomb girl, embrace your full self especially the imperfections, and don’t be afraid to experiment.”
You have amazing skin, do you do anything special to maintain it?
“Similar to my cosmetics this is something that is changing right now too. I believe in having a solid routine but I realized that after a while it may be time to switch things up and see how your skin reacts to certain products.
I start out by using the Acure’s Brightening Facial Scrub. This is very inexpensive product I learned about earlier this year and it changed my life! SERIOUSLY! I just replaced my Kiehls Cucumber toner with Thayer’s Rose Petal Witch Hazel toner. I love it so far, it leaves me toned, helps with dark spots, and leaves a light rose scent.
After toning I use Lux Lite moisturizer created by Tracy Husdon, my dermatologist. I highly recommend Tracy if you’re in the LA area, not only is she amazing but she’s the epitome of Black Girl Magic!
Do you have any personal beauty icons?
“Yes, I have four. My mom because she has a carefree eclectic sprit. Rihanna for being daring, versatile, and unapologetic AF. Solange for obvious reasons. Kahlana Barfield Brown because she’s just bomb and makes everything look effortless.
Here at ESSENCE, we believe beauty starts from the inside out. How do you like to keep your mind, spirt and energy in check?
“To be honest I have so many forms of self-care, it can range from splurging on myself to hanging around my closest friends. I tend to work a lot so anytime I can chill is considered self-care for me.”
Last question, how would you describe your signature beauty look?
“I mentioned earlier that I’m the president of the pixie fan club, so I would say my signature beauty look is my short hair followed by a strong “glow” look, makeup wise.”
