Best in Black Beauty 2017: The Game-Changing Products Overhauling Our Daily Routines

Launches of the past year were all about innovative formulas, and these picks certainly fit the bill. Our faves include a dry cowash that conditions and refreshes, an invisible gel sunscreen, a hair oil that promotes hair growth, a teeth whitener that brightens beyond the surface and a micellar water cleanser that rids scalp of gunky buildup for weightless curls.

It’s that time again–the 2017 edition of our annual Best in Black Beauty Awards has officially arrived! We’ve spent weeks swiping, swatching and smelling the newest products so you don’t have to. From the splurge-worthy to the drugstore faves and Black-owned must-haves, these are the picks that every Black woman must know. Stay tuned as we continue to unveil this year’s winners!

This feature originally appeared in the May 2017 Issue of ESSENCE Magazine.

Best in Black Beauty – Game Changing

There’s nothing worse than weighed down, tangled coils. One of our favorite cleansing ingredients, micellar water, has moved over into the hair world and we are addicted. This hair serum rids the scalp of gunky buildup and oils, giving curls a bouncy, refreshed look and feel without drying them out.

Even though it’s 2017, it’s still shocking to see how many sunscreens show up ashy or chalky on brown skin. Cover FX understood the importance of sun protection and created an invisible formula that protects skin from harsh sun rays, but also works as the perfect primer for makeup. This award worthy sunscreen makes it easier than ever to include SPF in our daily regimen.

We all know and love a Colgate smile, but this new toothpaste takes your pearly whites to a whole new level. Infused with hydrogen peroxide, a professional whitening agent, this toothpaste whitens teeth from below the surface.

Hair oil is a top pick for keeping strands frizz-free and moisturized. CURLS launched a new Blueberry formula that is not only uber-hydrating, but also promotes growth with the help of blueberry extract.

Truth be told, brown girls are often skeptical of dry shampoo because of the white residue often left behind. Natural hair brand favorite, Cantu, heard the concerns of Black women and found a solution—a dry cowash. Apple Cider Vinegar refreshing spray not only cleanses the scalp of oil and dirt, but it conditions the hair as well. And the best part of all; it goes on crystal clear.
