Black Women In Hollywood Honoree Lena Waithe Says There's A 'Black Renaissance' Happening

Lena Waithe says we’re in the midst of a “Black Renaissance.”

The ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood honoree walked the red carpet and stopped for a chat with ESSENCE Now host Makho Ndlovou and digital director Yolanda Sangweni, where she talked about the amazing projects coming from Black creatives.

“I think it’s more than a moment,” Waithe said. “Normal people try to duplicate Black stuff, but you can’t duplicate Atlanta. You can’t duplicate Get Out. You can’t duplicate Dear White People. They know they have to come to the source and they have to ask us to help. And, I think we’re in a much more powerful position than we’ve been in.”

Waithe received the Ford Vanguard Award at the ESSENCE event, where she shined a light on the Black LGBTQ community in her speech, “Being a gay Black female is not a revolutionary act. Being proud to be a gay Black female is.”
