Hey world, it's Christina Coleman with Essence.com and this is the Over Explainer. [MUSIC] There seems to be a lot of talk about women's rights, specifically what the hell we do with our own bodies And a lot of that talk is happening in rooms filled with men. Man of whom probably have no idea what a cervix is. Let alone a, we won't go there. But since the dark cloud that is the Donald Trump's presidency took hold of America Senate Republicans have been working feverishly to defend Planned Parenthood, setting the use of funds being used for abortions. Now, I don't have enough time to discuss why the hell you all should stay out of our wombs. Sidebar, can we do an our long episode on abortion? Cuz yeah, we need that. But I do wanna reiterate that Planned Parenthood is more than abortions. I can't even believe I have to say this, but let me over explain it. For one, about 90% of Planned Parenthood services are preventative care. That means affordable birth control, STD prevention, education services, and overall healthcare services for people with financial burdens. Where's the All Lives Matter crowd now? In addition, PP can be directly attributed to reducing the rate of teen pregnancies in the US. And it's worth noting that the defunding of Planned Parenthood will hurt women that look like me. Although most of the centers are in predominantly white neighborhoods 14% of patients nationwide are black. Wait, and the last point, abortion services account for just 3% of Planned Parenthood's work. So hands off Planned Parenthood. I never understood the obsession with controlling women's access to healthcare. Seriously white men, could you imagine a cabinet of women deciding what happens to you down there, feeling uncomfortable yet? Until next time. [MUSIC]
