Former South African leader Nelson Mandela was released from the hospital today after a rather lengthy stay.
According to The Associated Press, Mandela was treated for a lung infection and had gallstones removed during his nearly three-week visit. He will now receive continued care at home until his health returns to 100 percent, says his spokesman Mac Maharaj.
The 94-year-old former president is said to be recuperating nicely and is in “good spirits.” Because of his age, doctors are taking extra precautions with his care.
Despite spending Christmas Day in the hospital, the leader was not alone during the special holiday. South African President Jacob Zumba, along with numerous members of Mandela’s family, including his wife, Graca Machel, were at his bedside.
