Since 1970, ESSENCE has provided an exceptional lifestyle platform for African-American women. Now, it’s time to represent Black Men with the first-ever ESSENCE Men’s Summit!

Through a series of vulnerable conversations and engaging dialogue with some of today’s most distinguished gentlemen, the ESSENCE Men’s Summit will uplift and inspire men and women with an impactful and purpose-filled day of virtual programming. The summit will speak directly to the complex experiences of Black men in this current national and global climate. The ESSENCE Men’s Summit is a safe space for our men to nurture and nourish each other in the name of brotherhood.

On April 19, 1989, a young woman was brutally attacked and raped in Central Park. When she recovered, she had no memory of the assault. Five boys, including Raymond Santana, were tried and convicted of the crime. They became known collectively as “The Central Park Five.” On December 19, 2002, the convictions of the five men were overturned. Santana had spent five years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Earlonne Woods was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. In 1997, he was sentenced to 31years-to-life in prison. While incarcerated, he received his GED, attended Coastline Community College and completed many vocational trade programs. In November 2018, California Governor Jerry Brown commuted Earlonne’s sentence after 21 years of incarceration. Upon his release Earlonne was hired by PRX as a full-time producer for Ear Hustle, contributing stories about re-entry.
