The Main Event: October 18
Howard University hosts a homecoming that is the must-do event for fall in Washington, D.C. Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, dance icon Debbie Allen and legendary author Zora Neale Hurston all attended this institution nestled in the Chocolate City. This year, funny guy Steve Harvey is scheduled to broadcast his nationally syndicated radio show live from the campus.

Located in Hampton, Virginia, this school has produced impressive grads like Booker T. Washington (who went on to start Tuskegee Institute) and our very own editor-in-chief, Angela Burt-Murray. This year, expect exciting performances from old-school faves Frankie Beverly and Maze.

Women as diverse as literary great Alice Walker and childhood actress Keisha Knight-Pulliam have graced the halls of this distinguished college. As the neighboring school to Morehouse College, this institution of higher learning is an important part of the Atlanta University Center (AUC). Hotlanta will get even hotter when neo-soul artist Dwele performs.

Across the way from Spelman College, Morehouse also belongs to the popular Atlanta University Center. Civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and film titan Spike Lee both graduated from “The House.” Past years’ festivities have included performances by funky artists Bilal and Janelle Monáe and parties till dawn.

Way down in Tallahassee, Florida, is where many journey every school year to study at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Notables that have made the trek to Gatortown include tennis legend Althea Gibson and rapper-turned-actor Common. Expect hip-hop chart-toppers T.I. and Young Jeezy to put on a sweat-inducing show.
The Main Event: November 8
Founded by Booker T. Washington, this Tuskegee, Alabama, university claims radio icon Tom Joyner as an alum and George Washington Carver as a former faculty member. R&B crooner The Dream is expected to throw down amid the flurry of step shows, tailgating and parades.

The halftime shows by Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana, are infamous. With a legendary marching band and infectious school spirit, this year’s homecoming certainly won’t disappoint. Grammy-winning singer Erykah Badu and NFL veteran and former GSU head football coach Doug Williams (who’s also the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl) both attended the home of the Tigers. It really doesn’t matter who else performs — the GSU band always provides more than enough entertainment.
