Nearly each semester in college, I was able to channel whichever fashion persona I wanted to embody. There were some days when I channeled Rihanna and would go braless with a graphic tour tee with denim cut-offs. But there were other moments where I had to go to Forever 21 to snag club fits. For you, the fashion market might seem a bit overwhelming. Especially since social media platforms are also pushing products.
Piecing your college wardrobe essentials together just got easier. It’s important to think through what exactly you might be needing most. And sneakers, accessories, and pieces you can mix and match should likely make the top of your list. I suggest these mainly due to the fact that these items will shape your wardrobe for the years you spend away from home.
When keying in on the exact items you’ll likely need, it’s also ideal to think about a blazer, a pair of tailored trousers, and a raincoat. In my opinion, you can never go wrong with either of these options. Maybe you’ll have to pop out for an interview or conduct one via Zoom? You never know, and you might as well always be ready for whatever life throws your way.
Below, I’ve listed an assortment of affordable college essentials you can phase into your wardrobe.
Don’t Sleep On Business Casual Essentials
Before my first semester in college, I’d already gotten my first suit, so I was able to bring it along for school. If you’re prepping to study business or a key area like journalism, it never hurts to have a blazer in your arsenal. Some schools might even expect you to arrive freshman year with a suit already. Round out your wardrobe with a blazer, matching trousers, and a solid raincoat.
Make Thrifting Your Best Friend
At my HBCU, thrifting was an important part of our college culture. When I moved to Tallahassee, I had already been thrifting and visiting consignment stores consistently for years. Shopping at thrift stores means that most of what you purchase won’t be worn by anyone you know, but also, depending on what store, pricing will be marked down. To me, both of these call-outs are appealing.
After you’ve settled into your dorm, try using Google to nail down the top affordable thrift shops near you. Promise me you’ll be grateful you know where Goodwill is, especially when you have an itch for something unique. Embracing sites like The Real Real and eBay early could also save you serious cash. Back during my college days, I was a pro at landing deals on eBay.
Invest in Sneakers
For years, I always looked to sneakers as my go-to shoe. This is largely due to me being an athlete for different eras in my younger life. Trainers are ideal for outings and classes because you never have to fear discomfort or bad weather. What I also particularly enjoy about sneakers is that no matter what type of outfit you have on, they will likely flow with it. Brands like Adidas and PUMA have been steadily releasing options that feel a bit nostalgic. I highly recommend Adidas’ Samba silhouette–they’re a classic that can be paired with dresses and your favorite mom jeans.
Experiment!
College is all about experimenting with your style. If you feel like bringing in “new year, new me” energy to this semester, I’m here for it. Brands like ASOS, Free People, and Lisa Says Gah offer trending items that are ideal for exploring. Look to Lisa Says Gah for fun tops, accessories, or their mainline products, which feature punchy colors and textures. As for ASOS, they stock brands like Topshop, which always stocks graphic tees, cute-sy leather handbags, and beyond. Free People stocks boho chic pieces. Think moto leather boots and jackets, linen staples and feminine dresses for all types of occasions.
