Relaxer Do’s and Don’ts

We all countdown the days to when our relaxer day is approaching! It’s a day we love to anticipate as it gives us a fresh start. The relaxer day process and the days leading up to the relaxer are very important. Over the years, I’ve found a few tips and tricks, through trial and error, to help prep for my relaxers. Try them and let me know which works for you.

Don't scratch, wash or work out 3-4 days prior to relaxer day. Believe it or not, this can cause scalp irritation, which can lead to burning. Let your hair rest.

Do coat the length of your hair with oil or conditioner to protect the previously relaxed hair from the relaxer.

Do place the relaxer only on the new growth. Plain and simple! Use the line of demarcation as a guide.

Don't apply relaxer to the edges and nape of your hair first. These areas are delicate and process very fast. Apply the relaxer to these areas last.

Don't relax any sooner than eight weeks. Stretch the frequency of each relaxer. Relaxing the new growth often can cause the hair to be over-processed, which can lead to breakage.
