A recent survey by the National Bar Association revealed that most Americans feel that race relations are worse today than 10 years ago but better than 50 years ago.
According to The Root, the survey also reveals that only 24 percent of Whites and 19 percent of Blacks believe the nation is close to achieving racial equality.
Benjamin Crump, president of the bar and attorney for Trayvon Martin’s family called the results of the survey “sad and frightening.”
“This survey shows that clearly there remains work to be done,” he said.
The survey also delved into where Americans place the responsibility of the inequities between Blacks and Whites. While 57 percent of White respondents said people of both races are equally responsible, about one-third of Blacks cited both races and another third attributed it to “White people of the past.”
It’s clear that White and Black people have differing views on the causes of the state of race relations in America, but all agree that there is much work to be done.
How do you feel? Are race relations actually getting worse or is the heightened documentation of racism (thanks to social media and more media coverage) making it seem worse now than before? Sound off below.
