Officials from the White House, Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced the launch of an AIDS awareness campaign that would focus on the groups most likely to be infected with the disease, starting with Black men and women. The campaign will focus on the alarming statistic that every nine and a half minutes another American becomes infected with HIV. They plan to use video, audio, print and online ads to urge people to better protect themselves with condoms or by abstaining all together. The five-year campaign will cost about $45 million, but many HIV/AIDS organizations believe that the government can do better. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation urged the government to spend $200 million and incorporate efforts to get more people tested for HIV.—WLW
