November’s midterm elections gave GOP leaders control of Congress, which convened this afternoon for its 114th session, reports ABC News.
Earlier this morning, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was sworn in as Senate Majority Leader, and John Boehner was elected to his third term as the Speaker of the House.
The new Congress welcomes 13 new Senators and 58 new representatives in the House, including Republican congresswoman Mia Love, who, in November, became the first Black female Republican elected to Congress.
Though Congress is still heavily white-washed—The Washington Post reports that it is 80 percent White males—it is the most diverse group in history: The House now has 84 women and 44 Black representatives, and the Senate has 20 women and two Black senators.
