While Black New Orleans scrimmaged for food and shelter, neighboring Whites terrorized and frightened a city. A.C. Thompson reports in The Nation Magazine, years after Katrina, White New Orleans are still bragging about their post-Katrina attacks. White residents blocked off their neighborhoods from Black refugees using leftover debris and lumber, according to Theroot.com. Gun-toting militia men took to the streets, pelting racial slurs and shooting innocent bystanders.
Residents likened killing Blacks to killing pheasants, “If it moved, you shot it.”
Eyewitnesses saw at least 11 Black people shot, all by White assailants. These crimes remain unpunished, as police, all these years later, have yet to investigate the events.
