Earlier this year, the naturalista was named the newest brand ambassador for Dark & Lovely and talked to PEOPLE about the journey to love her natural hair. Saying that she never embraced her natural texture until college, she felt that it was an important part of self discovery to let go of relaxers and allow her kinks to flourish.

“It was later, around college, when I realized I didn’t have a clue what my natural hair looks like because I had been getting relaxers for so long. It was a matter of, ‘What does my natural hair look like if don’t manipulate it, or chemically alter it at all? I don’t know! Who am I?’”

Teyonah will return to the small screen when the next season of Survivor’s Remorse premieres August 20 on Starz.
