One Cut, Two Ways: Day to Night Tress Transformations

According to top stylists, there are three criterion for a great haircut. The style should flatter your face shape, be easy to maintain and, most importantly, it should be versatile enough to go from day to night with minimum effort! Whether it’s back-combing the crown or adding some slinky spirals (like Alicia Keys, left), we show how top celebs take their A-list haircuts from “shopping with the girls” casual to “hot night on the town” fancy.
Kelly Rowland’s wears her long, jet-black extensions slightly wavy for day. For a more polished, nighttime look, she adds a blunt bang and flatirons her tresses.
Up and Away
On off-duty days, Kerry Washington usually favors finger-styled, loose waves. Her red carpet styles are super-glam, though, like this dressy, oversized bun.
Mary J. Blige’s off-duty hairstyle is slightly tousled and swooped across her forehead. The songstress gets glam by curling the top portion with a large-barrel curling iron, teasing the roots a bit, and smoothing back away from her face. So chic!
First Lady Locks
By now, Michelle Obama’s daytime bob is downright iconic! But we love it when she kicks the style up a notch—ie, this piecy, artfully tousled updo—for nighttime events.
Beyonce’s casual hairstyle is usually an ultra-long, swingy, soft blowout. At an awards show, she got glam by adding adding tons of volume at the roots, and then loosely gathering her hair at the nape of her neck.
For day, Ciara goes for long, loose waves; but at a recent evening soiree, she rocked a half-up/half-down style paired with a trendy pompadour.
We love Taraji P. Henson’s chic, long-ish bob! For day, she rocks a sleek wrap, but at the Oscars, she added volume at the crown, which accentuated the choppy layers of her cut.
Rihanna’s two-toned bowl cut has inspired tons of imitators! She ups the “fancy” quotient by adding a longer piece in front, swooping it across her forehead. Too glam.
Jill Scott’s casual hairstyle—a lustrous, slightly highlighted ’fro—is almost as famous as her husky voice! At night, she sweeps the back into a tight updo, while leaving out a full bang.
