Cynthia Bailey and her husband Peter Thomas are moving forward with their divorce plans, but Peter says the decision is more hers than his.
Cynthia first confirmed her plans to file for divorce at the 2016 ESSENCE Festival earlier this month, where she told E! News that she realized it was the right thing for her after she and Peter agreed to take some time apart six months ago. “The more we got used to not being together and living together, the easier this divorce is going to be,” she said. Elaborating further, Cynthia also shared that she hopes the divorce process will be as amicable as possible. “I don’t want it to be an ugly divorce because I still love Peter. I just don’t want to be married to Peter anymore.”
While Peter admits that they’d spoken about divorcing, he says the official announcement wasn’t something they planned together. “We have discussed divorce. It wasn’t something that I wanted,” he told Uptown. “But it is something that I believe she thinks she needs. And honestly, I wish we could have made the public announcement jointly.”
Viewers who have watched the couple’s relationship play out on several seasons of Real Housewives of Atlanta are shocked and saddened by the news, but Peter says he wants fans and the world to know that the demise of their marriage was not due to any infidelity or dishonesty on his part. “I love Cynthia. I have never cheated on her. She knows this. I have never taken any money from Cynthia. She knows this. I have never done anything, but love and defend my wife. She knows this too.”
Peter admits that reality TV did take a toll on their relationship over the years, but says their “individual ambitions” were also contributing factors.
Cynthia and Peter wed back in 2010, which was also the year they joined the RHOA franchise.
