When thinking about what beauty lessons she’ll impart on her daughter, Washington is very clear: to lead by example.

As a child, Kerry Washington wasn’t a glam girl. In fact, exploring fashion and beauty was a by-product of red carpet appearances as her acting career developed. But, one thing she took away from her childhood is her mother’s attention to self-care. Washington explains she didn’t grow up with a lot of money, but one of the ways she felt empowered and special were weekly manicures with her mom.

“My mom is a retired professor who has a timeless elegance about her,” says Washington. “She’s not into trends, but she always looked great. Growing up she always received a weekly manicure, and when I got old enough we did it together.”
