ESSENCE POLL: Where Do You Stand on the Jovan Belcher Murder/Suicide?

Comments
Jovan Belcher

Tragedy struck the NFL on Saturday when Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, 25, murdered his girlfriend and mother of his three-month-old daughter, Kasandra Perkins, 22, before turning the gun on himself.

The couple reportedly got into a heated argument hours before the incident occurred. Belcher was upset when Perkins returned home late from a Trey Songz concert. A friend of the family said that Belcher didn't like Perkins going out with "the baby at home." Other news outlets are reporting that their relationship became strained after the birth of their daughter. Belcher shot Perkins eight times in their home.

Unfortunately, as the investigation moves forward in search of a motive, many are wondering if Belcher's mental health may have played a role in the killing and suicide. As ESPN highlights, many players often feel like a commodity rather than people with emotions and problems. It's unclear if the added pressure of performing on the field and taking care of a family may have contributed to the incident.

With so much chatter about why he may have killed Perkins and taken his own life, we have to ask, with whom do you sympathize? Do you feel sorry for Belcher if he was under too much pressure from work, family and life in general? Are your thoughts now focused on his slain girlfriend and their orphaned child? Or are you saddened for everyone involved in the situation?
