If you and your man could use a little more spice in your sex life, the key to revving things up could be as simple as having a little chat about your sexual needs. Research shows that couples who talk about sex report better, steamier and more intense sex lives than those that don't.  It turns out that talking about sex openly with your partner is the key to having the best sex of your life.

The science behind this research is the underlying idea that sexual communication reflects general communication patterns in the relationship. Talking to your partner is one of the most fundamental concepts of a healthy bond, and if there are tensions or barriers preventing you from opening up, those roadblocks can also impede your activity between the sheets.

For couples looking to embrace more open sexual talk, Dr. Laurie Mintz, author of "A Tired Woman's Guide to Passionate Sex: Reclaim Your Desire and Reignite Your Relationship" offers these few tips:

  • Add verbal utterances to your sex talk.   During sex, moaning and breathing heavily are common, but add a few words of encouragement too. Positive feedback can make an already steamy lovemaking session even more hot.

  • Learn to express how you're feeling clearly and directly. Don't expect your partner to read your mind. Provide specific expectations and listen to your partner's desires as well.

  • Talk about sex in a casual setting.  It's okay to talk about sex in the bedroom, but be open to discussing the issue at other times too.  Bring up the topic during private time together such as during dinner at home or while watching TV one evening.
Once you and your man open up about your sexual desires, don't just talk about it — be about it! Do you feel comfortable talking to your man about sex?
