Interior design maven and host of HGTV's "Myles of Style," Kim Myles, will answer a question submitted from an ESSENCE.com reader every day. Kim believes that interior design should offer a lifestyle that's chic, vibrant and attainable for every homeowner or renter. "My goal is to offer simple solutions that help the average person achieve the look that they want without going into debt. There is absolutely no reason for great design to be overly expensive or exclusive," she declares. Today's topic: Grown out of her childhood bedroom Dear Kim, I want to do something special for my daughter who just moved home from graduating college. She is constantly working at her new grown-up job but comes home each night to her little girl room. We haven't updated it from her junior high school pink decor. She is a hard worker and a great woman and I want to reward her. I have a small budget of $1000 or so to spend on the project. What do you recommend I prioritize spending the money on to get the most bang for my buck? KIM MYLES: I say clear out the room completely and start with a clean space. Once your daughter has chosen a color she likes, take a monochromatic approach to the makeover. Decorating in different shades of the same color yields an amazing result, and takes the guess work out of the job. If (for example) she chooses green, then paint every wall in a mid-range moss green. Next, purchase bedding in a soft celery hue, and add an area rug that's a darker version of the wall color, but has an interesting pattern. Hang floor to ceiling curtains in white canvas, accessorize with black, and you're good to go! Sophisticated, simple, and totally attainable with a $1000 budget. Have fun!  Read more: Need help selecting furniture for your space? Have a disagreement with your spouse on a color to paint your walls?
