A suspect has been arrested in the shooting of Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller, who was gunned down on May 31 inside Reformation Lutheran Church where he was attending church services, according to USAToday.com. Tiller was a forthright defender of women’s right to abortion and his clinic in Wichita was one of only three places in the nation that still performs abortions after the point when a fetus can survive outside of the womb. Tiller had previously been shot in both arms and his clinic was bombed in 1985. The clinic was guarded and he usually traveled with security.
In a statement about the incident, President Obama said, “I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.”—WLW
