Have you ever wondered just how pricey that cab ride was from West Philadelphia to Bel-Air California in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

In this video, we’re breaking down just how much it would have cost fictional character Will (played by Will Smith) to travel from Philadelphia to Bel-Air in California.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first aired in September 1990 and went on to have a successful six seasons before the last episode aired on NBC in May 1996.

Prior to landing the lead role in the hit series, Will Smith was a rapper. As HuffPost writes, Smith accepted the role after he had forgot to pay the IRS and owed $2.8 million in back taxes. In order to pay the sum, Smith’s financial advisors urged him to take the show NBC had offered, though Smith had no prior acting experience.

Not only is the show still considered a major gem in the Black community today, but it also birthed one of Hollywood’s hottest couples, Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith. The couple met while Pinkett-Smith was auditioning for the role as his onscreen girlfriend. She didn’t get the role because apparently she was too short.

In the video, you’ll find out just how much it would have cost the fictional character including a variety of tip options.

The Fresh Prince's driver would've received a grand total of over $4,560. If Will would've moved his West Coast [UNKNOWN] today, he would've had an even bigger fare. Due to inflation, he would've spent around $7,290. His 20% tip would have been $1,458, in total his trip would have cost over $8,740. Now if we were to listen to the theme song Will Smith only takes a cab when he arrives in Hollywood. The eight extra verses reveal that he takes a first class flight all the way to California The average cost of a one-way ticket in the 90s would have been $107. Today, a first-class trip would start around $800. The cost of his orange juice and his champagne glass? That would have been free. Needless to say, he would have saved over $4,460, moving to the city of stars by taking to the skies. [SOUND] Coinage, lift, well spent. Presented by GEICO.
