In an exclusive interview at ESSENCE's 10th Annual Black Women In Hollywood Awards Gala, Common talked to us about Donald Trump's threat to bring National Guard troops into Chicago to curb gun violence, saying he doesn't focus too much on the government's problematic efforts to "help" the storied city. "I really try not to focus on what the government is saying because they haven't shown true sincerity or true efforts to better the community holistically," he said. "I just try to see what we can do as the people from a grassroots level." Check out Common's tips to heal the nation's inner cities in the video above. [MUSIC] You know I'm from Chicago. So, I focus on that city a lot. I focus on my city a lot because it means a lot to see the people living well off. So, I really try not to focus on What the government is saying because they haven't shown true sincerity and haven't shown any true efforts to better the community as a whole, holistically. So, I don't focus or don't listen to it to be honest. I just try to see what we can do as the people. What we can do from a grass roots level, to also utilizing a political success on a local and state and, and holding businesses accountable to businesses that we support, so, I have to say is ideas in development, but our hearts are in it to make Chicago better, and to make all our inner cities better for, for people, color and. That affects the world. [MUSIC]
