World’s Oldest Person Dies at the Age of 116

After a long and fruitful life, the world’s oldest person has died at the age of 116.

USA TODAY reports that Susannah Mushatt Jones died last night at her home in a Brooklyn senior housing facility after battling an illness for the last week and a half. She leaves behind more than 100 nieces and nephews.

Jones, who was born in 1899, was named the world’s oldest person last July. She worked as a nanny in both New York and New Jersey before starting a college scholarship for Black women. After receiving the record, she told the public that her secret to a long life was getting plenty of sleep and eating bacon.

The record of world’s oldest person will now go to 116-year-old Emma Morano of Italy.
