The Quick Read: Washington D.C. Residents File $1 Billion Lawsuit For Gentrification

Civil rights lawyer Aristotle Theresa has filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Washington D.C. on behalf native D.C. residents for gentrification. The suit claims that the district has implemented policies that cater to anti-Black residents and promote discrimination of age, source of income, race, family, religion, and matriculation in order to attract the “creative class.” Several DC agencies are being sought after for in damages and displacement. The city’s response is due to be filed by June 25. (Vibe)

Dr. Dre has a Marvin Gaye biopic in the works. The rapper, whose film producer credits include Straight Outta Compton, has been authorized by the legendary singer’s estate and granted the rights to use Gaye’s music catalogue. Several directors and actors, including F. Gary Gray, Jamie Foxx and Lenny Kravitz have tried to bring this story to life, but no one has had the family’s blessing until now. (Variety)

Texas Republican senator Ted Cruz has announced that he will introduce emergency legislation that keeps immigrant families together once they cross the border into the U.S. “All Americans are rightly horrified by the images we are seeing on the news, children in tears pulled away from their mothers and fathers,” he tweeted. “This must stop. Now.” The new proposal will require  that asylum cases are adjudicated within 14 days, new temporary shelters and an increase in the number of immigration judges. (The Hill)

JAY-Z has signed a deal with Puma as Creative Director. He was previously reported as the new president of Basketball Operations, but ESPN’s Darren Rovell set the record straight. “I can confirm that according to his deal with PUMA, JAY Z’s official designation is Creative Director,” Rovell quoted Adam Petrick, Puma’s global director of brand and marketing. “I referred to him today (as president of basketball) by an informal designation.” Hov will help Puma select players to join its basketball efforts and contribute to the brand’s overall direction. Several musicians are set to join Lauryn Hill on her upcoming Miseducation tour. SZA, Nas, Kelela, Santigold and a handful of others have been confirmed to perform with the “Ex-Factor” singer. The tour will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hill’s classic solo album, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. The tour kicks off July 5 in Virginia Beach, Va. and concludes Oct. 5 in St. Louis, MO. (Vibe)

After spending two seasons on VICELAND, late-night talk show hosts Desus and Mero—whose real names are Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez, respectively—are headed to Showtime. The network announced the news via Twitter on Monday (June 18) while Desus thanked the show’s previous home. “Shouts to @viceland for giving us the opportunity to make the number 1 show in late night for the last 2 years,” he wrote. “Looking forward to doing big things at @showtime!” The new series is scheduled to premiere in 2019.
