Researchers at The University of California disproved the age-old theory that opposites attract. They found that people are actually more drawn to potential mates if they are “of their own or similar league and desirability.”
Online dating data for over 2,000 heterosexual users was used to help create these findings, which repeatedly showed that people sought candidates that were similarly as “popular” as they were labeled.
“Individuals on the dating market will assess their own self-worth and select partners whose social desirability approximately equals their own,” researchers said in a statement presenting their findings.
