Dear SHMS, I wish I could get my love life as together as my career. I dated my high school sweetheart for 4yrs on and off. He even proposed to me when I was 19. No one on my side of the family was happy I said yes because he is 3 years older than me and he can’t keep a job, he didn’t graduate high school, and he is in and out of jail. 2yrs ago he went to jail again and while I was in school I took my friendship with one of my classmates to the next level. We have been a couple for a little over a year now and we are both in love. I told my ex in jail that I found somebody else but I still wanted to be friends. Now he is out of jail and I made the mistake of seeing him. I wasn’t intimate with him in anyway, even though I wanted to so bad. My feelings have me all messed up. My ex still wants to marry me but he said we can be best friends since I’m in a relationship. When I talk to my boyfriend about marriage he says he is too young to think about that now. Oh, my boyfriend is younger than me. I know my ex needs to get his life together before we get married. But, should I go back with him and be by his side while he gets it together since I know he wants to get married or stay with my boyfriend who has it together (job, car, own place, and school) and hope marriage comes one day?
