So many were confused by Stacey Dash’s surprise appearance at the 88th Annual Academy Awards Sunday Night.
When Chris Rock introduced Dash to the stage as the new director of the minority outreach program, Dash, perhaps not realizing her appearance itself was part of the joke, shouts, “I cannot wait to help my people out. Happy Black History Month!”
Dash had advocated eliminating BET and Black History month after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy erupted in a “Fox and Friends” segment back in January.
“We have to make up our minds. Either we want to have segregation or integration,” she stated. “And if we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black. Just like there shouldn’t be a Black History Month.”
BET responded to her statement by playing a marathon of past music videos that featured the actress with the hash tag #NeverForget.
Audience members clapped politely for the Clueless star, while those who better understood the cringe worthy moment reacted in expressions that screamed “awkwaaard.”
Better explained as an inside joke than a flop, Stacey Dash had to take to Twitter to (firstly, introduce herself and) explain her appearance at last night’s Oscars:
