Sports Illustrated Releases Unofficial Cover Commemorating U.S. World Cup Victory
Sports Illustrated

The U.S Women’s National Team won big this week by beating Japan 5-2 in the World Cup finals—and Sports Illustrated will commemorate their victory with a special edition cover. “Special” because this week is one of four weeks a year that SI doesn’t print a new mag, fresh off of their annual “Where Are They Now” summer double issue. But they couldn’t just ignore the biggest sporting event of the summer, could they?

This digital cover, shot by SI photographer Simon Brutey, captures that unbelieveable moment when the team of 23 champions—Abby Wambach, Christie Rampone and Sydney Leroux, to name a few—receive their hard-earned trophy.

This is a special win for Leroux, who recently spoke about her struggle with identity while growing up in a predominantly white community and how she found solace in soccer.
