Solange was pictured last week behind the DJ booth at the Miu Miu Galleria opening in Houston sporting a head-turning, sky-high, braided bun.  Solange is no stranger to eye-catching looks– she’s brazenly rocked a “Big Chop,” down-her-back braids, and supersized afros time and time again.  This look was an edgy addition to Solange’s bevy of hot ‘dos and we love that she’s not afraid of making a statement with her hair.

The first time we saw Solange bring back box braids was in early 2010, when she sported waist-length plaits at a club opening in Las Vegas.  A few days later, she twirled them into a big topknot for a dinner party in Los Angeles.  That would be the first of many braid sightings on the superstar songstress who has made her ever-changing natural hairstyles a part of her mane mantra.

If you’re considering rocking braids, here are a few tips that will help you protect your own hair underneath the extensions.

  • If you’re leaving in braids for more than four weeks, be sure to wash them to clear any buildup on the scalp which could prevent healthy new growth. Dilute a dollop of moisturizing shampoo with 4 ounces of water in a small spray bottle. Spritz the mixture onto your scalp and massage to break up any residue. Rinse thoroughly. We love Nothing But’s Cleansing Conditioner.
  • Deep condition your new growth and braids by diluting a quarter-size amount of conditioner with water and focusing on the length of the braids that has your real hair mixed in. Stack the braids on top of your head and wrap with a steaming hot towel for an easy at-home deep conditioning. Try Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Masque for a surge of moisture and strengthening.
  • Pay close attention to your hair during the take-down process, since this is the period where fragile strands will break off if you’re not careful.  Snip the braided extensions well past the point where your hair ends and use a detangling spray and rattail comb to gently unravel the braids. We love Mizani’s D’Tangle Spray.
