Days after the sexual assault of a young woman in an Atlanta nightclub was allegedly captured on social media, city police have made an arrest.
According to CBS46 Atlanta, a local CBS affiliate, Dominique Williams, 34 turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday after investigators with the Atlanta Special Victims Unit secured a warrant. Williams is now being held at the Fulton County Jail on the charge of aggravated sodomy. Bond has not been set.
Chris Stewart and Joshua Palmer, attorneys for the alleged victim, said in a joint statement that Williams’ arrest serves as vindication for their client “and all other women who have been victims of sexual assault.”
News of a sexual assault on the dance floor of Opera Nightclub in Atlanta first came on January 20, after Facebook Live viewers called Atlanta police after seeing what they believed to be a rape happening in real-time.
The Atlanta Police department stated the next day that they had identified the assailant and was working with the victim who had left Georgia following what was supposed to be a birthday celebration at the popular nightclub.
For their part in the case, Opera released a statement, saying “At this time we have met with the Atlanta Police Department and have provided them with everything they have requested,” management said in the statement posted Jan. 20. “We will continue to aid and support their investigation in any way we can.”
CBS 46 notes that the investigation is still open and ongoing.
