Many people blamed the rapper for distracting the champion during one of the biggest games of her career, but the newly named highest paid female athlete in the world sets the record straight--she just wasn't at her best on game day and that's no one's fault but her own.

Sorry haters, Drake wasn’t the reason Serena Williams didn’t take home the top prize at the U.S. Open last year. 

The tennis champ told Melissa Harris-Perry in her new Glamour cover story that the blame placed on the rapper was unwarranted.

“I don’t think that was fair,” she said. “I’m the one who’s playing, who’s making mistakes or making winners. I’m not one to blame anyone else for anything. And I don’t think anyone else should either.”

The loss kept the newly named highest paid female athlete in the world from a calendar Grand Slam year.

Williams and Drake were a rumored couple at the time and many took to Twitter placing blame on the Canadian star for distracting her during such a big match but it’s blame that Williams assures everyone misplaced. 

“I played a really good opponent that day. And I wasn’t at my best.”
