“It’s fascinating-slash-scary how to prepare yourself for something like this,” said Roberts via satellite at the Television Critics Association. The breast cancer survivor will take medical leave either at the end of August or early September. Roberts’ sister will donate the bone-marrow for her procedure.
Ben Sherwood, ABC News president, says in her absence many of the network’s standout stars may fill in for Roberts including, Babara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Kelly Ripa and members of The View.
Every move is strategic at this point. Good Morning America beat out NBC’s Today for the fourth consecutive week and the network hopes to continue it’s ratings momentum in Roberts’ absence. “The run that we’ve had has truly energized me,” said Roberts. “It’s pretty good medicine, I’ve gotta say!” Sherwood agrees, “After 15 years of silver medals, these guys now have the gold.”
At the time of her diagnosis, Roberts said with confidence, “My doctors tell me I’m going to beat this – and I know it’s true.”
Fight on Robin Roberts, fight on!
