RNC Chairman Michael Steele is back in the news, this time for his comments about Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor. In an interview with CNN’s Campbell Brown earlier this week, Steele insinuated that White men wouldn’t receive equal justice under Sotomayor’s rule. The remark is in reference to comments she made during a speech delivered at University of California, Berkeley in 2001.
In her speech, the Judge’s ending sentence in which she says, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a White male who hasn’t lived that life,” has sparked the most controversy thus far. However, Steele asserts that he is not being inflammatory towards her specifically but did remark that he feels her comment does “give one pause” as it seems to segregate White men from the rest of the pack.—WLW
