Rihanna tells what happened on that dark and horrifying night.
UPDATE 11/6/09: Part 2 of Diane Sawyer’s exclusive interview with Rihanna reveals what happened on February 7 and why their love was so volatile. “He was definitely my first big love. We fell in love with each other. To fall in love with your best friend is pretty scary. The more in love we became, the more dangerous we became to each other–equally as dangerous because it was a bit of an obsession almost.”
What happened on that night? “I caught him in a lie. He wouldn’t tell the truth. I wouldn’t drop it. I couldn’t take that he kept lying to me. I wouldn’t drop it and obviously his back was up against the wall because the truth was right there in the text message. So, it escalated toward him getting violent toward me. It was ugly.”
When the incident occurred in the car that night, thoughts went through Rihanna’s head. “When is it going to stop, when is it going to stop. He had no soul in his eyes. He was blank. He was clearly blacked out. He was not the same person when I looked at him. I was bleeding. I was swollen in my face. There was no way of me getting home. My next option was to get out of the car and walking in a gown and a bloody face. I really don’t know what was my plan. That whole night was not part of my plan.
“He was my best friend and we were in love, it just takes time. Love does not go away right away. He didn’t accept that very well. Obviously, he didn’t want us to be apart. I know had to make a decision for me. I don’t hate him at all, I actually love and care for him. I’m concerned about him doing well. I want him to have a great life and career and grow up and learn. Take this as something you have to go through and grow up.”–E.W.

Rihanna finally speaks out about what happened with Chris Brown
UPDATE 11/5/09: Rihanna tells Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America” that she was ashamed. “I am strong. This happened to me. I didn’t cause this. This happens to me and it can happen to anybody. There are a lot of women who’ve experienced what I did, but not in the public. It made it really difficult,” she said. “There goes my little bit of privacy, something that somebody doesn’t want anybody to know. The whole world knowing.”
She continues. “I didn’t want people to know that I fell in love with that type of person, so far in love…unconditional.” Sawyer said it takes most women 6 or 7 times before leaving. Rihanna said, “8 or 9, actually. That’s embarrassing. I don’t want that to happen. That is not what I want to teach people. I’m a human being. People put me on a a very unrealistic pedestal. All these expectations. I’m not perfect. I’m human.”
She continued: “The minute the physical wounds go away, you want this thing to go away. When I realize that my selfish decisons for love could result into some young girl getting killed. I could not be easy with that part. I couldn’t be responsible to tell them to go back. Whose to say that some boyfriend wouldn’t kill those girls. These are young girls. I didn’t realize how much of an impact I had on these young girls.”
On the very public incident with Brown: “It was a wake up call for me, big time. I say that to any young girl going through domestic violence. ‘Don’t react out of love. F love.’ Look at it for what it really is. And then make a decision. Love is so blind.” — E.W.

Rihanna Breaks Her Silence: “Now I Can Help Speak for Those Women”
UPDATE 11/04/09: In her interview for the December 2009 issue of Glamour magazine, Rihanna describes feeling violated by the circulated image of her bruised face.
“That is not a photo you would show to anybody,” she says. “I felt completely taken advantage of … like people were making it into a fun topic … and it’s my life.”
She also criticizes the media frenzy that swarmed the 21-year-old at such a delicate time.
“I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. It was like, ‘What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can’t go back home?'”
In the end, the pop diva believes that there this a positive element to this experience.
“The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women.”
“I am stronger, wiser and more aware. You don’t realize how much your decisions affect people you don’t even know, like fans.”
She also discusses how much of her new LP will be pulled from this rocky year. “I’ve put everything I’ve wanted to say for the past eight months into my music,” she says.
