South Carolina’s former chairman of the state’s Election Commission Rusty DePass has apologized after saying a gorilla that escaped from a zoo in Columbia was an ancestor of First Lady Michelle Obama, according to the Associated Press. The Republican posted the derogatory comment on his Facebook page. The latest reported insult to the First Family plays on old racist phrases of equating Blacks to monkeys, though DePass says his comments were based on the President’s evolution theories and not race.—CJ
