Rap Music: Started in Scotland, Researchers Say

Think that rap music was born in the streets of New York? Researchers say think again, according to United Press International. Professor Ferenc Szasz of the University of New Mexico says rap is a descendant of a medieval Scottish custom called “flyting.”  Szasz mentions that both American rap and flyting includes repartee, vulgarity and satirical lyrics. The professor also pointed out that Scottish colonialists taught “flyting” to slaves in the south.
