Queen Latifah has signed up to play M’Lynn, made famous by Sally Field, and she will also executive produce the film. Phylicia Rashad will play Clairee (Olympia Dukakis), Jill Scott will take on the role of Truvy (Dolly Parton), Alfre Woodard’s character is Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine), Condola Rashad is set to play Shelby (Julia Roberts) and Adepero Oduye, from Pariah, will play Annelle (Daryl Hannah).
The story follows the close relationship of six women through their ups and downs and is expected to begin shooting next month in Atlanta. Kenny Leon has confirmed he will direct the TV movie.
“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding and falls in line with our strategy to make Lifetime a first stop for the industry’s best both in front and behind the camera,” said Lifetime president and general manager Nancy Dubuc. “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage — and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”
