On Friday night at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena, Prince stood dressed in a yellow suit over a matching turtleneck and only had a few opening words for the crowd: “We’re gonna just jam tonight—it’s just an old-school party,” he then proceeded to do just that with a show that covered his 35-year career.

The ESSENCE Festival headliner, along with his 21-piece band, gave a show highlighting not only his phenomenal work but also his influences and legacy.

“Put your phones down. Nobody’s calling you—all the funky people are right here” he told the crowd.

He graced the audience with gems like Sheila E’s “The Glamorous Life,” “1999,” and “Let’s Go Crazy” before making his way into an encore segment featuring hits like “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die For You” and “Let’s Work.”

The funky affair wouldn’t have been complete without the second encore, a segment dedicated solely to Purple Rain.

We can only imagine how he’s going to set the stage ablaze at the 2014 ESSENCE Festival.
