President Barack Obama issued his customary Mother’s Day proclamation honoring moms around the nation.
“Today, we continue to mark Mother’s Day by paying tribute to the women who shape our characters and set our families up for success,” he wrote in the proclamation. The President further acknowledged that it’s through the hard work of the nation’s mothers that we learn the principles of compassion, service and unconditional support.
Since taking office in 2008, the President created a White House Council on Women and Girls to “ensure we integrate the needs of women and girls into every decision we make.” He also signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help working moms secure equal pay for equal work.
“Let us pay respect by embracing the women who continue to guide and inspire us,” he wrote, “by holding fast to the memories of those who live on in our hearts.”
