President Obama sat down with the show's creator to discuss the drug trade and its impact on American culture.
President Obama revealed that he is a huge fan of critically acclaimed HBO series, The Wire, calling it one of the greatest television shows in the last couple of decades.
POTUS sat down with the show’s creator, David Simon, to talk about the drug trade and its impact on the American culture, reports E! news.
The Wire, HBO’s successful series, took a look at the Baltimore drug scene and the struggles of law enforcement.
“I saw this from a perspective of a state legislator,” said Obama. “This explosion of incarcerations, disproportionately African American and Latino, and the challenge which you depict in your show, folks go in at great expense to the state, many times trained to become more hardened criminals while in prison, come out and are basically unemployable and end up looping back in.”
“Nobody incarcerates their population at this level,” Simon added.
President Obama says if we can start thinking more productively about this problem, “In 20 years, we can say to ourselves, maybe we got a little smarter.”
